| Small traces of contaminants (such as disease-causing bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi, and protozoa -- including Cryptosporidium and Giardia) can be found in untreated water. These pathogenic microbes must be treated before use. High doses of ultraviolet light energy at a wavelength of 254 nanometers destroys pathogenic microbes by disabling their reproductive process. Without the ability to reproduce, the microbe is harmless and is considered dead. The process of disinfection is a positive alternative to using environmentally-harmful chemicals. |
