Here are the main components for a whole house system:
Item Price
1 sediment filter (this is a dual gradient density filter which means that the outer layers of this filter screen out particles over 50 microns in size, and the inner layers screen out particles over 5 microns in size.  It is 4.5 inches in diameter and 20 inches long. $  25
1 12-micron carbon filter which removes organic chemicals and chlorine.  It is 4.5 inches in diameter and 20 inches long.  It is good for 26,000 gallons of chlorinated water. $  50
2 filter housings with 3/4" ports, bracket, and screws for the filters ($72 each).  The maximum operating pressure is 90 psi.  The maximum operating temperature is 100 degrees fahrenheit. $144
1 plastic wrench for the sediment and carbon filter housings $    3
1 FilmTec XLE-4040 membrane.  This works on water which has pressure of 50 - 600 psi.  It produces 2,400 gallons of water per day (which is 100 gallons per hour) under test conditions of 100 psi, 77 degree Fahrenheit water, and TDS of 500 ppm.  The average person uses about 70 gallons of water per day. $360
1 PVC housing for the membrane $150
1 1/2" x 1/2" Jaco fitting for the membrane housing $    2
2 3/8" x 1/2" Jaco fittings for the membrane housing at $2 each $    4
2 heavy duty clamps to hang membrane housing at $8 each $  16
1 3/8" JohnGuest shutoff valve to serve as a flow restrictor $    3
Total $757

You will have to purchase all other tubing, connectors, fittings, etc. from another source (such as K&M Plastics, W.W. Grainger, or PlumbingSupply.com).  You may be able to use 3/4" washing machine hoses instead of tubing.  After your water passes through the whole house reverse osmosis system, it should go to an open air tank or container which has an electronic float valve so that the system turns off when the tank is full. You will have to purchase the tank and float valve from another source too.  To save on freight, you can look for tanks in your local Yellow Pages or you can buy one from a company like one of these:
Chem-Tainer;
Norwesco;
Park Plastic Products;
PolyProcessing Company;
Snyder Industries, Inc.;
Swhift Systems, Inc.;
Terracon Tanks; or
The Sustainable Village.

Once the water is in the tank, it will have to be pumped into your water pipes.  We sell a pressuriser for this purpose.

Important notes:
1. Although installation of a whole house reverse osmosis system is similar to an under-the-counter system, we cannot give you advice on how to install these components, so you either have to install them yourself or find someone who can.  Otherwise, it might be better to contact a local dealer and buy the system from the dealer.
2. The product water of a reverse osmosis system is aggressive on copper pipes and will eventually dissolve them.
3. If you have hard water, you could increase the life of the membrane by purchasing a water softener.  (Very hard water can ruin the membrane quickly.)
4. The higher the pressure, the purer the water.  If you'd like to increase your water pressure, you can purchase a pressuriser or a larger pump.  For the "XLE" model membranes, the maximum operating pressure is 600 psi.  For the filter housings referred to above, the maximum operating pressure is 90 psi.
5. You will need to install a valve on the waste water tubing coming from the membrane.  You should adjust it so that you waste at least three times as much water as you produce.  This waste water can be returned to your well, used to water your landscaping, or sent down a drain.
6. Other than the manufacturers' warranties, there are no express or implied warranties.  We assume no responsibility for consequential damages that may result from improper installation or the failure of the components.
